Achingly well written

Written by The Grey Madness  (6/10/2008 12:54:04 AM)

I have worked in prison for about 7 years within Forensic Psychiatry and deal with acute risk to self and others, +++ internal distress, self harm, suicide attempts, and the bain of illicit drug use/abuse on a daily basis. I am keenly aware of the harsh mistress that effectively controls those addicted to drugs, I see them do anything to get them in prison (and it's not that hard), I see the controlling grip drugs have on every aspect and every waking moment of their lives, I see them lose themselves and lose their family, I see the damage their addiction does in the community and how their need for drugs spirals the drug trade, supports the gangs and kills innocents on our streets, "P" is killing NZ and any bust does little to dent the plague that it is, never the less I have had some success with some prisoners regarding drugs even though this is not my primary function in the prison, so sometimes they do hand over a couple of cards for a new hand, although hard and often marked by failure, it is possible.

The smallest step is huge if it is the beginning.
