Grandpa (Challenge 18)

Grandpa (Challenge 18)

Sitting across from him,
White haired and balding,
Much wisdom within him,
The waitress turns to me and asks,
“And what will he have?”
I simply reply, “I don’t know, ask him!”
She turns to him with a belittling smile, and asks,
With a voice
As if talking to a baby.
How must he feel,
Being treated as less than?
He is not feeble,
He is not inept,
And far from senile.
But no one assumes that.
Their ignorant minds
Hold only the stereotypes.
When will they learn
To treat their elders
With dignity and honor,
Instead of holding on
To the stereotypes?
The majority probably never will,
And that makes me so sad,
For him.
