Night sought refuge under
the canopy of virgin evergreens
as Dawn painted the sky
a radiant gold
filtered by lingering clouds
from yesterday’s storm.

“A perfect day for fishing,” I mused,
salivating on the aromatic prospect
of striped bass sautéed
in mom’s secret spicy sauce;
an unlikely outcome given my
streak of zero catches
but who’s counting?!

Aroused by the lure of the hunt
and the cool caress
of frisky gusts of wind
blowing ripples into waves
and life into the sails
of “Persistence”,
I gather my gear:
hooks and rods,
bait and pails,
cooler and beer…

Maybe today
I’ll finally break the seal
off mom’s secret spicy sauce.
