I found you in a dream again

I found you in a dream again

At five in the morning
dawn crosses my mind
but the words of other writers
are ringing in my head

I try to dance the sleep
from my eyes
with a laurel leaf shuffle
down the hall to the bathroom
and wring the words from my brain
to find my own shocking phrases
of release

Something with truncated efficiency

The mockingbird swallow outside the window
dries blood in my veins
and I know the dreaded licentiousness
of the morning dove
is sure to follow
but the beads of sweat have dried
even though my nightmare lies on the pillow still

Drawn into play in this misguided hour
between true sleep and the absolute
knowledge that it is time to be awake
I knead the dough of my memory
to find a less startling dream

But time beckons me on
with its own beat and my heartbeat
regulates my eyes back to the love state
of REM

In the orchard I find myself in
bees hum around
but the true buzz I feel is the cider
wrinkling me
with its familiarity

And you are there again
for me like you have never been
in reality

You call to me with
words of cherry stone
through wine colored lips making sentences
that would never fall from the pale lips
you have in this life

it is that outrageous resistance that causes my panic
in the daylight
but here in my sleep
I seem to find what I want

I find warmth and love
I find your nude body
I find your arms
and I find love

These are the moments
whose heads have been dashed
on the rocks below
where drugs skewer the sublimity
of all dreams

These are the moments that the drugs take over

I do not want to wake
and find you are polite and proper
because I do not want to end the tryst
of you speaking the thoughts I dream you think
Thoughts that are banished and forbidden
in our world

But I do wake again
and find you polite

I always hope you do not recoil
from what is screaming
from my eyes
and I hope today
you do not see me recoil
from the polished speech
of your politeness
