The sun has faded
No light in the windows
now except the candles
that burn for you

Night twisting its knife
in me. Moonlighting as a poet
you might remember somewhere
in the bowels of the city

Taking deep breaths of the pallid
air and lighting a cigarette
for comfort I try to turnover
a new leaf to fight
the menacing growl of midnight
The deep open wound night tears into me
Not knowing what it is
that will stop the misery

Open up and find it is a lost cause
being lonely
Being this out of place
in a not too foreign land

One touch shared, we move closer
Toe the edge of a cliff neither of us knows
if we could jump

Hear the calm, the water below
that would catch us like a mother

And the sense of panic is over
Delicate and lovely in its new pink
bonnet. Twisting our phrases into nooses

I would talk longer about it
but I do not like the taste
of feet and I cannot remember when
I have not had my foot in my mouth
So I lift nights veil like a broken vow
and kiss the bride

Once more step
into that bear trap
So desperate to gnaw my own leg off
to keep the freedom
I might be losing
until the world becomes nothing
but a marmalade dance
toasting the reception on its own dime

I share my life with you
as honestly as I can

Soft supple moonlight bearing down
on what is left
of what you left

Calling me names
I cannot defend myself against

I never said I would wait
for you and you never said
you love me
but months have passed
and it has been years since I met you
under a bleak sky filled with more pain
than we ever cared to imagine

The dark night
The cool even quiet
of the countryside
and soft rhythm of your heart
keeps me awake at night
because I cannot see with which beat
it will tire of me forever
