One Last Chord

One Last Chord

In the end,

all you were good for

was one last chord.

You had all that time,

and you used it.

Built everything up

in a crescendo

of meaningful looks and empty comments

that even now

are imprinted on my eyelids:

an endless slideshow of what will never be.

But at least you played your last song well,

rising higher and higher;

building up hope on both sides

until I couldn''t tell

who said what

and why on earth this even happened.

One last chord

struck so perfectly,

resounding so fully

that every note on the way there

reveals its importance

and revels in the light.

Nothing spectacular,

not in that sense, anyway;

just the general conclusion

of your arms slipping around me,

giving me one last

and then dropping out of sight.

But I can still hear the music now.
