Was There Ever a Chance?

Was There Ever a Chance?

Was there ever really a chance for us?

We were swimmers, fighting the ripping tide,
and diving into the crashing waves.

We were runners, racing on weary legs,
and pushing against the raging wind.

We were climbers, laboring up a vertical wall,
and dodging the rocks tumbling all around us.

Was there ever really a chance for us?

Was it all worth the pain and the struggle
of the attempt at happiness together?

Or does our failure already answer the question?
