And So It Goes

And So It Goes

The tiny black ant coils and writhes on the pavement,
after the large leather boot that crushed him
has walked methodically away, totally unaware.

The small grey squirrel pants in dying agony on the wet asphalt,
while the rusty old red pickup-truck that hit him
has casually driven on, without the vaguest concern.

The helpless brown deer lies bleeding on the forest floor,
as the determined hunter who fired the bullet into his flank
begins to approach, slowly and quietly, preparing for the kill.

The wounded, self-berating man sits in thick, heavy solitude
in the dim shadows of his silent, lonely apartment,
after the woman who left him to wallow alone
in the dark, foggy depths of his depressed mind
has moved beyond him to a new life, and a new world,
giving no thought; no, not even a momentary pause
to the one she once claimed she cherished more than her own existence, and adored with an undying bond of perfect love.
