Looking At You

Looking At You

Looking at you:
lying asleep on the bed;
your satiny hair spread in random wisps
over your pale cheeks, and across the white pillow.
The filtered light of the early morning
falls across your tranquil face in golden streaks.

Looking at you:
with your tender mouth bowed upward
in an innocent, dreaming smile;
your closed, fluttering eyes so unaware
of the heartbreak soon to enter your life.

Looking at you:
with my hand clamped and trembling
over my jaw-clenched mouth,
as the tears begin to trickle down my cheeks.
Oh god, how can I steel myself into leaving you now?

Looking at you:
with an aura of soft, angelic beauty
surrounding your childlike, reposed figure on the bed.
I lay a gentle kiss on your silky cheek,
and take one more lingering look at you,
as I begin to back away from you,
and disappear from your life, forever.
