On The Stage

On The Stage

Alone on the dark, empty stage.
I stand and gaze upon the rows of empty seats;
mute witnesses to my hollow, empty soliloquy.

I watched the hem of your long dress disappear
as you turned and exited through the curtain.
No final words did you utter, to remain buzzing
in my ears, and ringing in my startled head.

Did I stumble over my lines once too often?
Did I miss one too many of my cues?
Did I not act my part with soul and conviction?
Did I try to upstage you, and steal the spotlight?

I watched your eyes narrow to furious slits,
as your mouth clamped shut, biting off your words.
No inspiring speech did you leave behind
to vibrate and echo through the theater hall.

Alone on the dark, empty stage.
I stand and stare at the immense crystal chandeliers;
deaf observers to my impotent sound and fury.

["All the world's a stage, and all the men and women
are merely players" -- Shakespeare]
