The Heart

The Heart

The heart in love races and paces,
with a banging, thumping rhythm and beat,
flushing the fiery blood through the pulsing veins,
and coursing up into the blind, stricken, spinning head,
whose world is transformed into a phantasmagoric
wonderland of red-hot volcanos, and aqua-blue lagoons.

The heart in loss cracks and breaks,
with a dull, soundless, sorrowful sigh,
as a chill wind begins to blow through the fragile frame,
and up into the achy, swollen, tortured eyes,
which look upon a world covered with knife-sharp reminders,
and filled with the omnipresence of agonizing memories.

The heart in loneliness hardens and freezes,
with a stiff, icy, paralyzed darkness,
that dries, shrivels and decays the bitter breast,
as the black sickness oozes up into the cold, dusty brain,
whose world is morphed into a stony, malevolent
landscape of fearsome specters hiding in deep-grey shadows.
