Dead Roses and Sour Wine (a Valentine Lament)

Dead Roses and Sour Wine (a Valentine Lament)

Your red roses have withered and dried;
the petals curled into a deep maroon,
and dropping from the blackening stems.
Your lip stiffens as you reach out a trembling hand
and grasp the dead bouquet with bitter intent.
Nobody hears your sharp, brief screech,
as you thrust your palm to your mouth
in painful reaction to the thorn's seemingly
purposeful and malicious flesh piercing.
Sweeping the damnable vase to the ground
in a quick, sudden black rage against life,
you stagger to the dark kitchen for your bottle,
only to discover with overwhelming dismay:
your wine has soured to a vinegary bile,
and your last glass has been shattered
into one hundred tiny shards of hopelessness.
