On the Approach of Spring

On the Approach of Spring

The old, gritty snow and ice slowly melt away;
shrinking down, pulling in, and wetting the streets
and sidewalks; as tiny rivulets of dirty water trickle
and pool, then evaporate back to the now warmer sun;
leaving behind a salty, muddy, gravelly residue in its wake;
not unwelcome by the world, so long paralyzed and trapped
by the seemingly endless rule of a merciless, relentless winter.

The head-crushing, heart-rending pain of jealousy and loss
slowly begin to recede at long last from my wounded, weakened body, and my sickened, addicted mind;
as the seemingly omnipotent power of unrequited love,
which invades the brain like an attack of army ants,
devouring the will with fiery, voracious gluttony,
and destroying the mind with utter, controlling dependency,
finally withdraws and pulls back like the receding tide.

Even the harshest, most tyrannical winter must, in time, surrender to the vernal resurrection of springtime;
and the red-hot fire of broken love must eventually
fizzle and cool to a mild memory of mellow sadness
for that which perhaps could have been, in a perfect world;
yet, like a weak, fragile green sprout, never found the strength
to push through the stiff, stubborn, icy ground,
to grab the life-giving rays of the warm, bright spring sun.
