Along The Way

Along The Way

Off she goes, on her unclear, but determined way, feeling like
a capricious little girl caught-up in mad, nonstop race,
waving at the leering people, taking in all the blurry sights
at breakneck speed, while running farther and farther away
from my arms... away from my sight... out of my life.

I was a temporary placebo against harsh, stark reality,
and a secure port in the turmoil of her stormy existence.
I was a pair of strong, steady arms, and a set of soft lips
to sweeten the bitterness of her droll, everyday being,
and to offer love in the midst of a cold, hard, uncaring world.

Off she goes, pausing for one brief, backwards glance
along the way, where I still stand, paralyzed by the shocking
suddenness of our ending, and the heart-crushing,
head-spinning truth of her manifest indifference.
She was a runner in a race towards an unknown finish line,
and I was a short, sweet, welcome pit-stop along the way.
