I Never Knew

I Never Knew

The helpless runt-puppy squirms and gnaws in futility
to get to the milk of her indifferent mother's breast;
pathetically attempting to squeeze through her self-absorbed
siblings; quivering and squealing, in desperate, aching hunger.

They told me she was in love with me all along,
but never knew how to say the right words;
never able to find the inner-strength to face me,
and speak her fragile heart with courageous honesty.

The hapless, fallen baby bird cheeps from the ground in vain
up to her nest, impossibly far away, in the tall elm tree;
stretching her thin, bare neck, and spreading her tiny beak
in a triangular yawn; her impotent voice lost in the breeze.

They told me she wanted me with silent desperation,
yet never grasped the boldness to speak the sentence;
so now I shake my head in a sad, useless "I never knew",
as I watch them lower her casket into the cold, wet grave.
