She Won't Be Afraid (The Tiny Beam of Light: Part 4)

She Won't Be Afraid (The Tiny Beam of Light: Part 4)

The sun has dipped below the broad horizon
in a final, thin, crescent arch of deep orange,
as the last of the dark blue, elongated shadows
meld into the descending grey evening settling in,
and the street lamps begin to light up along the sidewalks,
with muted yellow glowing through dirty glass globes.

Once again, her nightly ritual of fear has begun,
as she scurries through the dusty, cluttered little apartment,
quickly flicking all the switches upward, and clicking
all the lamps on; desperately throwing artificial light
into the small, rapidly darkening rooms, in her usual
evening panic, with wide eyes, and quick, gasping breath.

She places her hands over her banging, thumping chest,
feeling the racing of her fearful heart begin to soften and slow,
as a sudden realization flashes on in her tumultuous head,
creating a quivery smile, which spreads across her flushed,
wet, still trembling cheeks, stimulating a joyous twinkle
in her red, blurry eyes, like a bright lantern through a fogbank.
For dwelling deep inside, the warm radiance of her
distant, but ever-present lover glows like a hot ember.
The tiny beam of light still shines, and she rests securely
in its comfortable presence... and she won't be afraid.
