Listening For a Song

Listening For a Song

I stroll alone at night along the maple-lined path,
while the silent stars twinkle with their ancient,
silvery shimmer, and the fog-ringed full moon
casts a pale light into the blackness of the evening.
The cool night breeze ripples the unseen leaves
in the lost upper-reaches of the dark trees,
which whisper to each other in hushed conversation.
My eyes begin to pool with tears as I listen to the
soft voices of the maple trees, and my heart
starts to weep down inside my breast, as I
catch the lonely sound of a solitary cricket,
chirping his one-note melody in the chilly darkness.
I'm searching the night for a lost something
I've never known, and listening in the darkness
for a song I've never heard:
That elusive, impossible, heartbreaking song
known as "Love".
