The Rhythm of Truth

The Rhythm of Truth

The front door closes with a small, sharp click,
shutting out the last of the light
and leaving me standing in numbed silence,
as my unwilling ears listen to her gravelly
footsteps quickly fading away, replaced by
a hot buzzing in my dizzy, dumbfounded head.
I place my trembling clammy hand on my
churning stomach, and walk to the window;
gazing out into the amber evening light,
watching the top of the red sun as it sinks
slowly below the distant flat horizon,
filling the air with a deep grey solemnity
and augmenting the thick, dark sadness
welling up in my shell-shocked brain,
while my body stands quivering and paralyzed,
and my heart begins to bang and thump,
pounding out the agonizing, intolerable truth
with an incessant, racing rhythm:
"Now it begins... Now it begins... Now it begins... "
Now begins my black eternity of loneliness.
