Little Bird (Flown)

Little Bird (Flown)

I never tried to trap you in a cage,
nor did I ever want to clip your wings.
I helped you to sing with the morning sun,
and we harmonized together to chase away
the dark clouds and the grey, soaking rains.
I warbled and trilled with you in praise
of the glorious blue skies, and we held each other
in a warm, safe embrace when the
mourning dove cooed its sorrowful dirge.
All that remains is a small downy feather
to remind me of the little bird who has flown
from my side without a chirp, leaving my heart
to cradle the tune of the nightingale,
echoing out into the cold, lonely darkness
of my silent, empty evenings.
