Midnight

Lying in bed in the silent darkness.
Midnight: Alone, but not lonely;
for my thoughts are filled with your smile,
and my ears resonate with the melody
of your voice; that voice that races my heart,
electrifies my breathing, and sets me aflame
with an unearthly passion never experienced!
Suddenly the darkness thickens and suffocates
me: my breath is stopped cold, my heart
thumps with a fatalistic dysrhythmia,
and my fire is snuffed out like a bucket
of water thrown onto the smoldering embers.
The truth grabs, stabs, screams and smothers
me, destroying my fantasies, and erasing
my dreams with one swift, obliterating stroke!
You are far away, and I cannot bridge the chasm.
Lying in bed in the silent darkness.
Midnight: Alone... Lonely... Oh so lonely.
