January Departure

January Departure

The fluffy clumps and sugary flakes
of snow whirl and dance in the dark
night air in a cold, wintery display,
as she steps out into the black and white,
icy evening, her feet making that squeaky
January crunch as she walks carefully
to her lightly snow-blanketed blue car,
and brushes the dry white flakes from
the windshield, never glancing back;
not once looking up over her shoulder
at the window where he stands gazing
out at her snow-shrouded silhouette,
the playful pieces of white twirling and
darting about her head, while a chill runs
down his spine, and his trembling fingers
press his drum-tight, nauseated chest.
The icy whiteness keeps up its frozen show
as she drives off into the stormy January night,
her tires leaving twin trails of black tracks
on the asphalt, and her last words leaving
a permanent wound in his burning brain
and a gaping chasm in his shattered heart.
