The slate-grey sky is threatening rain
again as he keeps on trudging slowly along,
his thumb aimed down the long straight highway,
his aching feet begging for relief, his droopy face
sweating in oily streaks, despite the sunless sky,
and the hazy, humid air weighing on his head
like a thick, heavy, water-soaked blanket.
Another vehicle approaches, as his thumb jabs
out in anxious exhaustion, only to suddenly
drop down to his side as the car races past in a
flash of blue, the stone-faced driver pretending
not to notice the weary-looking hitchhiker.
The large, warm silver drops begin to plop on
the asphalt around him, pelting his bare head
as the steel-colored sky begins to rumble out a
fatalistic warning of the inevitable deluge to come.
His teeth lock and his fists clench in stubborn
determination: He must escape! He must run away!
Down the road he must go... somewhere... anywhere... away.
Away from her.
Away from that face... those eyes... those hypnotic,
soul-igniting, brain-paralyzing, heart destroying eyes!
