The Lost Song

The Lost Song

I searched through the archives
of my memory, scanning all
the dark, dusty chambers and
the old forgotten rooms,
seeking that elusive song.
It was a tune from long ago,
a beautiful, haunting melody.
It was "our song".
My search was a futile venture,
a useless attempt at an
impossibly frustrating task.
For just as she has faded
into a vague wisp of foggy
remembrance, the tune
that once sent my heart on a
singing, dancing adventure
in a private ballroom for two
has withered and shriveled
into a lost jumble of notes
attached to a forgotten title,
abandoned somewhere behind
a creaky old wooden door
in a smoky grey corner of
my brain, where I long ago lost
my privilege and ability to enter.
