So Much Worse at Night

So Much Worse at Night

I pass through the dark in a veil of mist,
In a trance, like a somnambulist;
Spurred by an aching for you that persists...
Only it's so much worse at night.

An unseen owl hoots loud, as if to say,
"What are you doing?! Run the other way!"
It would be imposing, even at day...
Only it's so much worse at night.

Perhaps I should've stayed snug in my bed
Instead of letting myself get misled
By the unceasing draw to your homestead...
Only it's so much worse at night.

There's a permeating chill in the air;
I turn back toward home in the pale moon's glare,
Stuck with hollow loneliness and despair...
Only it's so much worse at night.
