Not Today

Not Today

His cheeks were ruddy.
His shoes were muddy,
Leaving tracks along the floor.
He threw off his jacket,
The wind made a racket
Gusting through the open door.

I sat by the fireplace,
Waiting for his embrace
To reassure me he would stay.
He drew nearer the flame,
Never uttered my name...
But his eyes confessed, "Not today."

As I poured him hot tea,
And he stiffly thanked me,
I thought of sending him away.
Though he tore it apart,
He still had my heart...
And it thumped out, "Not today."
