The Thick of Fall

The Thick of Fall

I'm ensconced in the thick of fall,
It's got me firmly in its thrall,
Steeped in the wonder of it all -
A diversion from thoughts of you.

This time last year, we travelled back roads
To visit our friends' country abodes;
To get you to come, I had to goad,
And beg you to be sociable too.

On the car ride back, we'd have it out -
I'd start to nag and you'd start to shout -
Both of us too engrossed in each bout
To enjoy the passing scenery.

We needed a fight intervention...
So now my heart is in suspension,
And fall has got my full attention
With its color-changing greenery.
