All Wrong

All Wrong

You're all wrong for me
Even though your heavy-lidded eyes
End in fringe like inky spider legs
That lightly sweep your cheek
Every time you blink.

Yes, you're still all wrong,
Though I can admire
The precise craftsmanship
Of the planes of your face,
Marble-carved and colored
An earthy buff beige.

And my heart may respond
With sloppy grand jetes
To your lush, imploring voice -
An ocean-deep, eddying whirlpool
Dragging all wayward travelers in.

The dark foliage of your hair
Steals the artificial light
As you read aloud from
The leather-bound book
By some long-dead master
With the studious
Inclination of the head
Befitting a scholar.

As I watch every tic
And listen for inflections
In your speech, I wonder
If maybe I wasn't
Quite right in thinking
You're all wrong.
