The Smile that Wasn't There

The Smile that Wasn't There

She had the perfect lips for it,
to launch the legendary ships.
All lucious, ripe and liquid wet
and yet in doldrums firmly set.

Her upper lip, ah, curved just so,
her lower, oh, curved just so more.
Between the curves a straight line merged,
the smile not there was what she wore.

Bright eyes that would be starlight specked
yet bitter bored remained.
Long hair to play along her neck
instead lay still refrained.

What loss for her, what joy submerged,
this beauty hid in sadness' grasp.
What loss for all? Next time I'll ask,
and maybe then she'll smile at last.
