Life for Today

Life for Today

Take these hands
and pause
Take the time
to notice life goes on
Mold your world
like those thoughtless steps you took in snow

Fish for a fruitful life
Stop to see
Breathe deeply
Laugh heartily
and smile unnatural smiles

Fabricate reality
until your backbones are cold
and your forehead is numb
and your limbs glow, soaked in elbow grease

Then you'll know Thoreau meant
life was filled with easy abundance
when mined for
And continue walking
turning crisp perfection into slush

It’s the closest you'll ever get to godliness
On you step
Live in a cabin in the woods
Let your mind dance while the flames dwindle
Warm your soul

Take these eyes
Hold my gaze
Do not lean too close to the water
Know me
Breathe once more

Blow away the smoke
Watch as the slush melts to the ends of you
and feel that you are home
Drop in the sweet smelling chamomile
Breathe as if for the last time

Open your eyes
and realize you more than owned today
You gave it your life, your love, your air

and await your next lover
Although today was more than you could ever dream of yesterday
and by the fire, drops will rise into these dreams
to thank you for treading softly
