the petal plucking game

the petal plucking game

She sits on the steps;
she's naming the petals
"She loves me" and "She loves me not."
There's one petal left;
one tiny gold medal
to represent what she had thought.

She fights back the tears;
already they're flowing.
No choice now but to let them flow.
She's fought with the years,
through every one knowing
some things are better just let go.

But everybody knows
that's just the way it goes when
one loves, one don't.
and everybody thinks
"it won't happen to me" no
it won't.

She throws out the stems;
she never much liked 'em;
the roses with all of their thorns.
She won't listen to friends.
Already they tried
to tell her, "Girl, but you were warned."

She buries her face
and tries not to show it.
Can't stand to face this kind of pain.
As hard as she tries
in her heart she knows it,
and there is no one left to blame.

because everybody knows
that's just the way it goes when
one loves, one don't.
and everybody thinks
"It won't happen to me" no,
it won't.

She sits on the steps.
She's naming the petals
"She loves me" and "She loves me not."
