The Windchime

Tinkling white seashells
Breezy spring days
Wrapped up
Tugging against yourselves
An exercise in self-sabotage.

Mother’s patience
Spider-web thin
White gold chain
Diamond and pearl
A gift to adorn
A little girl’s
Easter Sunday handmade dresses
Just like hers
Fingers wait anxiously as
Patience relieves
Life’s snarls
Easily unraveled
By her listening ear.

Wheezing breath,
Heavy and harsh
Fingers no longer
Nimble enough
To release
A little girl
From loss
My cheek against
Her cheek and
A whisper into
Her listening ear
“Go in peace,”
As she draws
One last breath

Untangling a breezy day’s respire
Patience and another of
Life’s snarls is unraveled
In the tinkling white seashells
Go in peace.
