A Soldier's Wife

A Soldier's Wife

Sitting and staring at the firelight
Put on another log. . .I'll be here all night

Sipping on a cup of tea
There's nothing in this world that can comfort me

Wrapped in this blanket I should be warm
But it's no substitute for your arms

You had to do what you thought was right
There comes a time when you have to fight

We both knew it might come to this
Today I gave you one last kiss

They gave me the flag that covered you
When you gave your life. . .I gave mine too

As we laid you to rest
I thought of how much we've been blessed

The fire's out now. . .my tea is cold
Still in the blanket with the flag I hold

Stars disappearing one by one
Chased away by the rising sun

You were my soldier brave and true
You made me proud. . .but I miss you
