If Only You Knew

If Only You Knew

I can't love you because I'm in love with you.

You've ignored me for months as though I've ignored myself

But you still dig your fingers in like you deserve a piece of the pie.

I'd happily give it all to you.

If only you knew

The world is yours for the taking

But you can't take mine without leaving me empty.

It's fine, you have brighter prospects,

There are other lives to light.

Rooms to fill with your charisma,

Hearts to break in nonchalance;

I hear they make no sound if there is no one around to hear it.

Keep your Mona Lisa smile,

I see your adoring fans and frown.

If only I was in their view,

Not for me; but holding you.

I remember our fleeting romance,

I remember your slender touch.

It stings when I think of it now,

If only you knew how much you meant.

That first night will burn on in my mind,

Love could never be branded so fast.

I felt as though I had found something special

But you were that treasure I could not keep.

When time slows to a standstill and the world is ours

I'll try to remind you

That for every eternity I cared about you;

You had me for a second.
