(named for Nokomis from the Tales Of Hiawatha)

At night when thunder roars
when thunder roars ungrammatically
Niki hides curled under the covers
with my wife and I...

Niki's twitching tail beats
a worried rhythm between
her backlegs as she pants and shivers
All 100 pounds of wolf-
fur covered with sweat...

Scared of roaring thunder
trembling in fright
And I wonder when the moon disappears
And I wonder when the sky screams
if all wolves like Niki...

Shake and cry in dark forests
when they are not safe
and warm their noses
buried under the covers
with my wife and I.
