An Owl named SPOOKY and a Mayor named CURLEY

The great—horned owl named SPOOKY for thirty years

Perched far from the Fenway fray

Was a special animal soul blinking witness

To three Bosox banners

Those faint fluttering hearts

That never gobbled the World Series honours

Until long afterwards

As SPOOKY’s talons snatched

A greyfieldmouse once a day

Pomposity himself

This king of the owls

Who dared to outlive ‘His Honour’

JAMES MICHEAL CURLEY a wiley old bird his-self

Four times the Mayor of Boston

The number of this hooting majesty’s subjects

Greater than any of the Democrat ward voting lists

Which CURLEY controlled by stuffing their fists

With money patronage jobs and a great deal of show

All the while SPOOKY was performing full—body rotations

Turning turning turning one—hundred and eighty degrees

His head glued eyes looking straight ahead

He had a heck of a neck

Like some Picasso painted politico

As he wrapped youngsters minds

With the practiced unfolding of his colorful broad wings

As he swooped about the Museum of Science

Eliciting gasps of wonder

The same as when ‘His Honour’ Mayor CURLEY

Knowing how to ring the bells

Of voters lined-up like eager children

Rewarded with free ice—cream in summer’s heat

Well CURLEY is gone now with his ‘last hurrah’

And SPOOKY went out with a silent nod

Both wise entertainers full of bombast and pretense

Winking and playing to their audience
