Early Morning Death

Dedicated to the loving memory of my mother, Dorothy Korba 12/27/31-9/14/07

Please rest in peace, Mommy.

Her lifeless body lay upon the bed
Ensconced in a plastic bag beneath the sheet
Bruises from treatment, both purple and red
At 5:30am, her heart ceased to beat

Her skin ghostly white except for the marks
Partly open, were her beautiful blue eyes
The yellow plastic of that bag seemed so stark
Irrefutable proof that everyone dies

Every inch covered except for her face
All the machines and tubes whisked away
In that yellow bag, her body they placed
Forever with me, that memory will stay

I think it would've been much more humane
If our last sight of her was as God had created
Not wrapped in plastic with its yellow stain
Why couldn't they just have waited?
