promise unfulfilled

promise unfulfilled

Gripped by tragedy’s unrelenting hand
The teenaged warrior screamed
As he made his final stand;
Crimson streams gushed from his mangled thighs
Like busted pipelines
Broken beyond repair,
Shredded to stumps of raw flesh and bone,
Leaving him suddenly cold in the desert’s heat,
Staring in disbelief
At his bloody booted feet;
Feet that would walk no more,
As images of youth flash before his tearful eyes,
As he lay in a crippled heap,
Waiting to die
On the scorched sands of a foreign land
From which buried bombs explode,
Transforming lives in a flash of fire and hail,
Terminating lives with a cocktail of shrapnel and nails,
Making widows of newly-wed wives,
Moving minds to ponder why we wage wars
When all we gain are body bags and battle scars,
Wounds that will never heal,
Feet that will never feel
The thrill of walking through fields of green willows,
Lives that will never fulfill
The precious promise of tomorrow.
