trading places

trading places

A teasing tingle rushed up my spine,
Tracing a tremulous line
From my dancing feet
To the edges of my mind
Where memories of youth huddle in forgotten chambers,
Stifled by the pressures of modern life,
Taking a back seat
To commercial drums beating
To the tune of power brokers on Wall Street.

Memories of an innocent time,
Fraught with adventure and experimentation;
When bills where paid by dads,
And moms made the best pies you ever had,
And guns were toys not weapons,
And schools bred scholars not felons.

Now cash runs the streets where I play,
And love and happiness is but a dollar away,
One elusive dollar from hell to heaven
And all I need is a triple seven
To end my streak of nickels and dimes
And trade my place in poverty’s line
For a chance to mingle with the world’s elite
And find the taste of wealth to be bittersweet.
