the flame of life

the flame of life

I pack
little scrap books from kindergarten,
with crayon jungles of virgin words
swingin’, jumpin’, huggin’
cuddly Teddy bears and dolls
crushed by childhood kisses
and candy stains from sweet teeth
hidden under pillows
where dreams were born.

I pack
token memories from high school
where boys transformed from clumsy to cool,
and books doubled in size,
and seeds of puberty were sown
to mom’s surprise;
"My baby’s grown into a little man,"
she beamed
then frowned
when it became known
that she’d become a grandma
faster than she could say ‘condom’.

I pack
battle scars from freshman year
when I pledged
then streaked cross-campus
in my birthday suit
shrunk by the chill of winter
and the frosty bite
of sharp sheets of ice
that clung like thumb tacs
to the soles of my bare feet,
making me the brunt of tiny jokes
and innuendos that snow-balled forever
into the annals of college lore.

These and other cherished memories
I pack
permanently into that special chamber of the mind
where, in the bleakest of moments,
I shall venture to rekindle the fervid flame of life.
