A trick of the light?

A trick of the light?

Tenderly I spoke of her,
thought of her,
laughed at myself
as I thought she would laugh,
perhaps without laughter,
cryptic in her smile.

Her uncommon gifts –
a trick of the light?

Through time I climbed,
in acceptance of fear
to see our meeting.
At first glance,
the cusp of knowing
wishes beyond hopes.

Racing hearts
bullish at my expense.

A perfect distance
kept without parting,
without hovering;
attached by airs alone -
airs dissolved by talk
and claret at dusk.

Together in nervous days
through toy hours.

In sight and the lull of touch,
with grace and gentleness
I turn her hair in my fingers
and clasp at wonder
and fragrance
at all her panoply of things.

The click of bright lipstick cases,
blossoms, fresh, rosen
golden chains
thin as silken threads
that shimmer over pale skin
gilding neck and face.

Amberine, deep shaded -
in coppered clouds we ran...

untill the letters came:
thickly inked,
purple stained;
a wintered paper
that chilled me
with frostbitten words.

The frozen wastes of love
now lie deep and silent on the wold.
