Morning Paper

Morning Paper

You left my heart silently,
in bare feet, on tip toes,
in the middle of the night,
while I slept on my side of the bed.
I woke up right on time,
made four cups of coffee (not eight),
grabbed the paper and a cup
then crawled back into bed.
I tossed the sports page to the floor
without thinking twice-
skimmed the headlines,
and got into the shower alone.
My daily routine,
just the same as before...
Before you were here,
sharing my coffee and my paper,
my toothbrush and my towel.
So I guess this is it?
We let go and move on,
living the same way we always have.
No longer fighting for cover,
or having to reach across
someone else to hit the snooze.
Just me on my side of the bed,
and you somewhere else on yours,
with only an extra pillow
to remind me that you're gone.
