a tree 4 the blues

a tree 4 the blues

I’m lost,
my soul’s capital
the fed won’t rescue me
I climb to the sanctuary
of my family tree,
combing through
each branch
that once bore fruit,
each leaf
that once dripped succulence,
for clues…

Clues buried in the biography
of a third cousin
twice removed,
orphaned at seven,
abused but never broken…

Clues lost in the lore
of a great uncle
long deceased
crippled by polio at four,
chasing gold
in the decathlon,
a hero’s mile later…

Clues entombed in dust,
resurrected by
prying eyes
with the pride of pedigree…

Who needs the fucking fed anyway...
when a tree,
so lush in history,
yields such
cogent clues
to enrich the soul,
unleashing the beast in me
to beat these burdensome blues.
