a soldier's plea

a soldier's plea

Trepidation held my hand
in the foxhole
while the devil ran
wind sprints through my mind,
hot-wired by a thunderous storm
of overweight bombs raining from heaven.

Commander…
Commander…
Why have you forsaken me?

Though it seems an eternity,
only a mere six weeks have passed
since I, a quirky senior,
squirmed in class,
whenever the eagle eyes
of Ms. Jenkins panned my way.

And mom cried…
O, how she cried!
As the uniformed hawks
descended
that misty Monday
and whisked her boy away
into the pith of terror
where death’s a coveted prize
to the enemy.

But I left a note,
an eight-letter quote,
under her pillow
just in case
an overweight bomb got a crush on me…

An angel held my hand
in the foxhole,
and together our spirits soared
to the heavens.

Commander…
Commander…
Why have you forsaken me?
