|Gone Without Warning
By DebDay1955 on 07/09/2008
In the innocent light of the early morning
Dawn’s gentle hand brushes back the cover of night.
Soft breezes stir the air carrying the promise of Spring.
This solitary moment is shattered without warning.
A shrill ring pierces the tranquil moment.
Across the line a trembling voice -
Stumbles over words frozen in time.
My heart stops as I realize what she meant.
Death’s icy hand clutches my throat.
In an instant my heart broke.
Waves of emotions wash over me.
For a moment I think it a cruel joke.
You are my oldest, closest brother.
A year apart, you lived life on the edge.
You took chances to live life to the fullest
Sometimes it seemed you thought of no other.
Flirting with danger is what you did best.
“Go out with a bang” you always said,
You’d try anything once , without regret.
Many times past, I feared you’d be dead,
You’d give me a wink and make me a bet.
Everything would be fine, you weren’t finished yet.
Kicked back at home, just last night,
You called me to say you were doing alright.
A long day at work, a bit tired that’s all.
Finally taking time to give me a call.
A family vacation to visit this Spring,
I recall our plans with such longing,
Never imagined what that next call would bring.
Or that you’d be gone before the next morning.
Fully intending that visit to keep.
Unknown to either, death was close by.
Though useless, I have to ask ,’Why?”
In the innocent light of that early morn’
There’s no way that this can be right.
My heart lies in shatters, yet I must carry on.
But wherever I go and whatever I do
I’ll never get over missing you.
