A Single Shard

A Single Shard

I stood in the doorway, looking round me,
And I saw you kneeling there on the ground
You said nothing was the matter
But I saw your heart, laying there broken
And the make-up running down your face, from the tears you had cried
I knelt on the ground, and held you close
Sharing in your shame, comforting the pain.
And when you were ready, I helped mend
That which had held so much more before, but now lay wilted
And when the time came, for the final shard
You put it in my palm, and said for me to keep it.
For a part of my heart, will be with you always
Your words echoed in my mind, to this very day
And what I wish to say to you, is that the same is true for you.
For my heart has been broken over time, and I have but one shard left to make it whole
Yet I choose not to, rather, to you I wish to give this shard.
So that you too, will hold a piece of my heart forever.
