The Pact

The Pact

Laughter turned to yelling
Smiles turned to tears
Kisses turned to blows
‘I love you’ fell on empty ears

Phone calls were ignored
Letters were returned
Gifts were thrown out
Pictures were burned

The words soul mate turned to just that, words
No meaning, no feeling, but hurt
Promises were taken back and broken
Answers filled with love before are now curt

An unspoken pact was made
Never could the other be seen again
And so it went for months
Until an accidental bump, not meant to offend

A look in the others eyes, and all returned
And, knowing that it would not work, they walked away
For the pact they made
Would be kept, at least for that day.
