the wool in my eyes

the wool in my eyes

The quiver of your lip’s
buried in real time’s speed;
eyes’ subtle shifts
shielded by a wink
and toothsome smile,
fodder for the smitten
me immersed completely
in the redolence of you…

icing hypnotic on the cake
I’ve eaten like Pavlov’s terrier
since ‘88
on our first date
when Prince rained purple all night long
at the Garden,
sixty thousand strong
but my heart was stuck on you…

unglued this day
two decades late
as the truth emerges naked
on instant replay,
compliments of Fate’s Private Eye.

(James G.D. Paul)
