birds in the trees

birds in the trees

Sketches of you,
etched in everyday faces,
I see from lens
tainted pastel blue
as the anguish I feel
since a love once true
departed like the green leaves of Summer,
twisting and twirling through the wind,
to enrich the loam of another…

while I,
armed with zeal Quixotic,
chased the greener grass
of exotic fields,
a task elusive as the wish
of the proverbial frog…

for no princess did I find
fairer than the one
left behind…

no treasure did I see
finer that the pearl
of a girl
worth more than
the birds in the trees…

'cause they all flew away from me.

(James G.D. Paul)
