surely you would forgive me if
by some sleep wrought oversight
i left from you and went alone into the cool dark
only so that i might miss you for some time
and so that when i rearrived you might love me all the more

certainly you my love could upon my return
wake with a start though i was so very quiet and
kiss me on the mouth with your eyes still closed
your hands still warm from the warmth of mine
and the inherent heat of your sleepful heart’s rhythm

undoubtedly you my every orison my unrepentant love
my every desperate desire would as you turn from wake
to sleep take me back with you into the night and the fields
and the moon of your gentle quiet sleep and forgive me
my absence though we are so very near
