they catch them

they catch them

i keep all of my secrets in the shell of the moon
face up and open like a bowl
where i can keep things
where no one can reach them

there are times
though rare
there are times
when the moon

so like a bowl
may wobble from side to side
and splash a whisper or
two over its yellow edge

in china they catch them
and they take them and use
them as lantern lights or as gifts to friends

in brazil they let them fall as
fruit falling too long after the harvest
to be kept for eating so they rot

in russia they are unseen invisible
within the snow falling and no one
ever notices them lying there melting

sometimes i am under the moon
when he lets fall one of my secrets
and i catch it before it reaches the ground
and when next you are sleeping
i give it to you knowing
that you won’t even in sleep
be as careless as the moon
though you are as bright
